Patong beach, Bars, bars and more bars

A night train down from bangkok and a number of buses took us to the Phuket province. We stayed in the Patong area (the party place) and walked around in the soaring heat attempting to find a certain guesthouse of which none of the locals had heard of...2 hours later we arrived at MK guesthouse which is now called Elvis Presley guesthouse as i found out on the 2nd visit to phuket some months later, 500 baht for a room which were nice compared to bangkok and relatively cheap for the area.

We headed out in to the madness of Bangla street which consisted of hundreds of drinking holes, strip clubs, go-go bars and fast food joints. Drunken tourists littered the streets, many of which seemed to be on 1 week holiday or had been living in phuket (older guys) for sometime in search of the cheap booze, cheap girls and maybe a little sun. We didn't take a liking to phuket and thought it was too in your face and didn't have a backpacker feel to it which is what we were in search of. However it was only a pit stop before the island of koh phi phi so things could only get better.

Patong doesn't offer too much apart from a boozy week away in the sun, but if your into diving or would like to give it a go you can do a 3 day padicourse for just over 200 pounds. Most of the diving is done out the the island of koh phi phi. Although rather cheap you can find it for less on koh tao and i think some better dives sites.
